Food for Kids Backpack Program
The program began in 2003 after an OKC elementary school student passed out in line
from lack of food over the weekend. Program was launched in 5 OKC
schools serving 180 children.
In 2011-2012 the program served over 13,500 children among 475 schools, with schools
representing all 53 counties in our service area (central and western Oklahoma;
the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma serves the eastern portion of the state).
The Backpack Program is run by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to provide
emergency food assistance, free-of-charge, for elementary school students in central and
western Oklahoma.
Food: All the food provided in the Food for Kids backpacks is nutritious, non-perishable,
kid-friendly food. There is no need to refrigerate any of the food, and there is no charge to
the school.
